Frequently Asked Carpet Questions

Why should I choose carpet?

How do I choose my carpet?

With so many different colours, materials and designs available, it can be difficult to choose the best carpet for your home. That's why The Carpet Showroom offers a FREE home consultation, to ensure you pick the right carpet for the right room, at the right price.

What is a saxony carpet?

A saxony carpet is a cut loop pile carpet, meaning that it is woven in loops. The loops are then sheared off, creating a carpet with an even and elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints, and are therefore more suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.

What is a twist carpet?

The yarn is tightly twisted and often heat set to retain this texture.

What is a cut and loop carpet?

A multilevel loop carpet, where some of the pile is sheared and others are left as loop, creating a sculptured pattern. The multi-level surface is great for hiding footprints and stains.

What is an axminster carpet?

A machine-woven carpet that is highly durable and has a luxurious feel. The process allows for intricate design and colours to be used.

What is a Berber loop carpet?

The Berber carpet is named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet that is named after the Berber people of North Africa. The Berber carpet is a modern style of carpet, distinguished by a loop pile construction type. They often contain small flecks of dark colour, on a lighter shade background.

What is a loop pile carpet?

A carpet style with a surface that is made up of uncut loops.

What is a wilton carpet?

A woven carpet that is produced in a similar format to the axminster carpet, the difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. It is made in a variety of patterns and textures but with a limited number of colours per pattern.

What is a velvet carpet?

A velvet carpet has a level surface pile of approximately 5mm to 10mm, with a very smooth, luxurious finish. Velvet carpets are also referred to as a "velour" or "plush" carpet.

What is a cut pile carpet?

A cut pile carpet has woven loops that are cut short, causing the carpet fibres to stick upwards. The loops are cut evenly over the surface and the tips fray slightly, to give a softer, plush feel.

How do I clean my carpet?

Below are a few simple guidelines, to clean your carpet:

  • Regularly vacuum your carpet, to prevent dirt being trampled in between the tufts, which will eventually wear away the fibres. Leaving your new carpet to "settle" for a few weeks is untrue. In fact, you should vacuum straight away as most new carpets shed loose fibres, which if left, can cause a matted appearance.
  • To avoid dirt becoming trapped in your carpet, place mats to the entrances of the room.
  • Accidental spillages occur in every home and no carpet is completely stain-proof. If there is a spillage, treat instantly by blotting to a damp dry state. Do NOT rub the spillage. Liquid spills should be soaked up immediately, with preferable a dry, white cloth.

How do I care for my carpet?

With a little care and attention, you will extend the life and beauty of your carpet. Below are a few simple guidelines, to ensure you get the most out of your carpet:

  • To avoid your carpet becoming flat, do not drag your furniture across it and occasionally rearrange your furniture, to avoid uneven wear.
  • Use scissors to trim down any occasional tufts that sprout from your carpet. Do not pull the tuft out of the carpet.
  • All carpets are subject to a degree of fading, but this is often unnoticeable for many years. For rooms that receive a great amount of sunlight, protect the carpet with curtain and blinds during peak sunlight hours.

NB. All cut pile carpets are liable to a degree of shading. This is due to uneven crushing of the surface, known as "pile pressure". Nothing can be done by the manufacturer to prevent this shading, but it is not detrimental to the longevity of the carpet.

Why has my carpet changed colour?

Your carpet may change colour over time for a variety of reasons, usually due to pile flattening, gradual soiling and slight fading of the dyes used to colour the fibres. A good professional cleaning will usually restore the carpet's appearance.

Why should I buy new underlay when I already have it?

For carpet longevity and to ensure best comfort and performance, it is recommended to use new underlay when fitting new carpet. Reused underlay can cause carpet to flatten in areas of heavy footfall.
